     behind the image, the imagination

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Photos by Mong-Lan.

Saigon was the city where I was born, but now it is called Ho Chi Minh City. On my visits back, I have always been inundated with the sights, sounds and smells of this city, whatever its name. Formerly the capital of South Vietnam, its architecture is very much stamped by French and American influences. Nonetheless, the wild and chaotic city is perfumed with the smell of nuoc mam (fish sauce), fresh fruits and vegetables sold in the markets, and Vietnamese delicacies sold by hawkers on the streets.
