Mong-Lan Workshops

Writing Workshop 1, Nov 21. VOICE:

As we enter the fall of 2020, often our voices have been drowned out, edited either by ourselves or others. Or our voices may have been lost amidst the noise of the media and society. In dealing with the craft of poetry, let us look at how we can reclaim and find our voices again, and construct and hone our craft through the lens of pathos. Considering this, what specific strategies within the realms of pathos can we use to implement and heighten this for our own poems to create impactful noteworthy poems?
(i.e., personification, pretending we are someone else; speaking in other’s voices if we cannot find our own, speak ourselves into healing.)

Writing Workshop 2, Nov 22. GROUNDING: What specific strategies can we use to ground the poem, and ground ourselves in the process? How can the soul of a place matter in our works and have the power to ground us, whether the city or the countryside, beach or farm? How can we use our dream lives and intuition to ground ourselves and our writing?

These events are supported in part by Poets & Writers, thanks to a grant from the Hearst Foundations.

The Dancer From The Dance

Event Description: How can we, and do we want to, separate the writer from the writing?— an investigation of how or whether we can separate the work, which we may like and even admire, from the author, who may have been racist, xenophobic, homophobic, anti-semitic, for instance Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Paul Claudel, etc.— and more recent examples of writers whose lives and political or social views may be problematic or even reprehensible, but whose work we may still want to read, admire, teach, and study.
Type of Event: Pedagogy

Writers Who Play: A Night of Writers Playing Music

Join Mong-Lan, Ken Waldman, Nathan Brown, Brian Laidlaw, Alison Moore, Jeff Talmadge, and other writers who are also musicians. Over the years we've done this kind of evening in Vancouver, Austin, Atlanta, New York City, Chicago, Seattle, and Portland. This time we found Lowcountry, a suitable space in San Antonio. Lowcountry is a congenial, live-music-friendly bar one-half mile from the Henry B. González Convention Center. No food, but restaurants are nearby. Stop by before a meal, after a meal, or bring food to the club. March 4 is National Waltz Day. We'll be celebrating.
